1903年是由初代社长神原胜太郎在广岛县沼隈郡千年村、开创了神原汽船的最初海运事业、并于1944年6月14日成立”濑户内海船舶株式会社”。1948年11月改名为”神原汽船株式会社”。成立当初主要从事九州煤炭的海上运输、后来也开始北海道煤炭等货物的运输、同时也从事日本国内其他货物的海上运输。
1963年加入”北洋木材运输协定”、1968年加入”南洋木材运输协定”后、神原汽船开始经营近海运输。1967年初在常石造船厂建造了神原汽船公司第一艘远洋船”天胜丸”、开始经营远洋运输。
神原汽船的不定期船部门有几十年的实际经验受到很多客户的信赖、并从事在太平洋、印度洋上的货物运输。此外还向世界各国的海运公司提供货船和汽车专用船的定期租船业务。
1983年神原汽船开始在日本和关岛、塞班、巴拉旺等密克罗尼西亚群岛之间经营定期海上运输、现在扩大到远东、东南亚各港口。并且也受理从欧洲和澳大利亚的进口货物、为地区的经济发展做出了巨大的贡献。
另外，神原汽船从1994年开辟了日中航线提供海上运输服务以来、现在又开辟了从中国的上海、大连、青岛、厦门等主要港口以及长江流域的各港口到日本濑户内海、九州、日本海的各港口和北海.
