Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the LCL vs. FCL cost break-even point?

As a rule of thumb, once cargo exceeds 13-15 CBM the unit cost of FCL (20GP) drops below LCL — switch to FCL. Below 13 CBM, LCL is more economical. The exact threshold varies by lane: long-haul Europe / North America lanes break even lower (10-12 CBM is already FCL territory), while short-haul Southeast Asia routes can stay LCL up to 18 CBM or more.

How is LCL priced? How do heavy vs. volumetric cargo compare?

LCL uses the W/M (Weight or Measurement) rule: it bills the greater of actual weight (tons) and volume (CBM), where 1 ton or 1 CBM equals one chargeable unit. Light cargo (density < 1 t/CBM) is billed by volume; heavy cargo by weight. Minimum is generally 1 CBM (some lanes start at 0.5 CBM). On top of base ocean freight you also pay CFS handling, documentation, EBS, and similar surcharges.

Where is the cargo de-vanned at destination, and where does clearance happen?

LCL cargo is routed to the destination port's designated CFS (Container Freight Station) for de-vanning. After each shipper's cargo is separated, the consignee is notified to pick up from the warehouse or arrange delivery. Customs clearance takes place at the destination port — the consignee uses the HBL (House B/L) plus invoice / packing list to file the import declaration. Duties are paid by the consignee or pre-paid via a DDP forwarder.

What are the risks of LCL?

Key risks: (1) co-loaded cargo may be pressed by neighboring goods — outer packaging must be reinforced; (2) if one shipment in the container has issues (e.g. misdeclared product name), the entire container may be held for inspection; (3) destination CFS charges loading / unloading and storage fees, and demurrage applies if you exceed the free period. We recommend solid outer packaging (wooden crate or film wrapping) and marine insurance.

What are typical LCL transit times on common lanes?

Shanghai / Ningbo to Los Angeles 14-18 days, New York 28-32 days, Rotterdam 30-35 days, Hamburg 32-38 days; Shenzhen to Singapore 4-6 days, Port Klang 5-7 days, Dubai 18-22 days; Guangzhou to Johannesburg 30-35 days, São Paulo 45-55 days. Add 2-4 days for destination de-vanning and 1-3 days for customs clearance on top of the sailing time.

Which commodities cannot ship via LCL?

Liquids (oils, chemicals), powders, items with batteries (lithium / pure batteries), magnetic products, perfumes / alcohol, dangerous goods (DGR Class 1-9), and food / fresh produce are typically refused for LCL — they must go FCL or via specialized service. Sensitive cargo (magnets, small electrical items) can sometimes ship via a "Sensitive LCL" service offered by select forwarders with prior declaration.
