波季港位于格鲁吉亚西部黑海沿岸南部，属于天然良港，为欧亚运输走廊和丝绸之路西部出海重要港口，与中国欧亚大陆桥东部桥头堡连云港相对应。2002年港口吞吐量约为500万吨。　　波季港现有15个可投入使用的泊位，总长度为2870米，年货物吞吐能力约600万吨。港区水深12.5米，最大可停泊4万吨海轮，有粮食、油料、散装货和集装箱等专用码头。2003年集装箱吞吐量为43000个。港口配备有各种现代化的起吊设备，单个吊车最大起重能力达45吨。港口有一输油终端，最大储油能力为250万吨。目前港口共有8000平方米的仓库，其中4500平方米为室内仓库。　　作为格鲁吉亚最主要的港口，目前波季港已同世界上几十个国家通航，与罗马尼亚、保加利亚、荷兰、希腊、比利时、德国、挪威、美国、土耳其和俄罗斯等国有定期航班，同中国的大连、天津和上海等中国主要港口有不定期航班。保加利亚还在波季市设有总领馆。　　波季港目前已部分私有化，但仍以国家股占大头。格鲁吉亚政府计划推进国有资产私有化进程，拟向外资出售波季港股份，美国和欧洲发达国家以及俄罗斯资本均有意参加。目前，一家荷兰公司和阿拉伯基金投资波季港扩建和改建工程。根据该港口发展计划，将在现港口的北部再兴建一现代化的大型港口，计划到2006年港口的吞吐能力扩大到1200万吨，远期规划到2023年波季港将成为吞吐能力超过4000万吨的黑海东部地区的大型枢纽港口。　　目前，波季港还为外高地区其它国家和中亚国家转运进出口货物，其中，亚美尼亚80%以上的进出口货物通过格鲁吉亚港口转运世界其它国家。今年以来，随着巴库-第比利斯-杰伊汗输油管道建设进程加快，大量的建筑材料通过波季港和巴统港源源不断地运到格鲁吉亚和阿塞拜疆，西方发达国家援助阿富汗战后重建及人道主义物资也大都通过格鲁吉亚波季港和巴统港后再陆路运输到阿富汗，因此，今年波季港货物运输总量将有大幅度增加。
