位于墨西哥中央高原阿瓜斯卡连特斯河附近，海拔1884米。气候温和少雨。附近有温泉。阿瓜斯卡连特斯，西班牙语意为“热水”。又因有迷宫似的隧洞网而称“隧洞城”。1575年建为矿业城镇，十九世纪五十年代成为州首府。灌溉发达，为周围水果、蔬菜区的中心。有金属冶炼、纺织、铁路车辆修理、陶瓷、烟草、酿酒等工业。
市中心广场的纪念碑标志着墨西哥全国的最中心，墨西哥所有的距离都从这里开始计量。
